2 old consoles for $41, need help...

Picked them up from someone on craigslist this evening. Both need lots of work, but I wanted a project, so I have one. One is an Atwater Kent Model 55. The other one, I do not know the manufacturer for sure, but on the front, it says "ARIA", and in the back, on the schematic, it reads "W, G, & C", as well as "Series 6A31." Can anyone give me some more info on these models?

Thanks
Joe

Well, Atwater Kent went under in '36, so the one is at least 71 years old...Actually, they didn't go under so much as A. Atwater Kent just got tired of fooling w/it, IIRC...

There's a whole lot of information about Atwater Kent radios here: http://www.atwaterkentradio.com/ and here: http://www.atwaterkent.info/

I like those old Atwater Kent radios, I have a model 76 I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

Deffly a Wells Gardner, they made radios for a number of retailers, the most notable being Monkey Wards. The chassis model # is telltale also.

The 55 is a tank, AK made some of the finest eqpt. ever for the consumer market. Depression killed them.

Do you need schematics? PM me if I can help.

Wells Gardner did build a lot of contract sets for general merchandisers such as Montgomery Ward, Gambles, Firestone, Western Auto...etc. In this area we had large Montgomery Ward store for many years until Mobil Oil bought them out and closed many of the stores and ran the rest into the ground. I run across a lot of Airlines and Coronados in this area as we also had a Gambles store and a Western Auto so we also see quite a bit of Truetone.

Montgomery Ward sold some really innovative or gimmicky sets depending on your point of view and example is the movie dial sets. Many Airlines came with chrome chassis, there is one set that has 2 chassis and 2 speakers and rivals the best of Zenith, Philco and others, I believe it was built by Wells Gardner.

Point of interest Wells Gardner is still in business, still an American company and traded on the American Stock Exchange
