Absolutely, major congratulations! They say Luck favors the prepared. But you earned that one with the dumpster dive. I imagine that with a few wooden blocks you could hammer that coil box back into a square shape.

Got the manual, that helps a lot. Thanks. When I have some time I'm going to hammer out all the dents, also need to straighten the radio's chassis a little. Probably will recap it before powering up, too. From what I've read they're prone to shorting out the power transformer on this model.

Great find! I know I did save a 1984 GE CD component stereo player from the trash while dumpster diving but this really tops that in spades.

Looks like the gubbins are all in good shape. Much easier to work on that my old Jeep set. The control I thought was bent looks like the mounting panel is at fault. Time for the autobody hammers to come out. Looks like I'm in for a night of recapping, too.

What an amazing save. I should really start going to my dump. It serves the entire county and is situated right next to the Nuclear power plant.

Nice score! It pays to be vigilant. As for getting the set to work it is more likely a matter of when than if; that's pretty forgiving gear. The dented can, once straightened, should be serviceable, although one of the variable capacitors may need some TLC and tweaking.

My guess is that whoever threw that equipment so unceremoniously into the dumpster didn't know a coil from a boil. A few years ago I scored a National NC303 at a local scrap yard. Fortunately it was set carefully just off to the side of the "tin pile", and had had nothing heavy land on it yet when I grabbed it, so it's all straight and complete. Some day I'll get up the ambition to recap it and fire it up.

At any rate I can imagine your dumpster dive being risky to life and limb; that unit you snagged looks very heavy indeed.

Uh, what's the Select-O-Ject actually do anyway? I'm not all the way through the manual.

Did a basic power test today. Clipped the capacitor people seem to complain about, wired up a light bulb with the mains and fired it up. The tubes light up and I got a pretty evil 60Hz hum from the speaker so it looks like the power transformer works. I guess I better get recapping now.
