philco 70a

Has anyone worked on a philco model 70A that can help me with a recapping issue? One of the capacitor plastic "cans" on the chassis had a cap in it. the diagram shows it to be a resistor. There were changes made by philco and my set has one of them but some of the set does not match the diagram or the original diagram before the changes. The tubes light up but the output tube (47) has grids that are glowing just as bright as the heater. I am confused. I have traced wires for 8 hours or so on this set but it just makes me more confused. Thanks, Doug

If the screen is glowing, look for an open output transformer - probably due to a shorted cap on the tone switch. Philco service bulletins are on my web page: http://www.audiophool.cjb.net/Misc/Philco_70.djvu
(you need the Djvu plug-in from lizardtech.com)
