Is this a 28" Zenith?

A nice 53 Zenith, the model number seems to suggest it's a 28" tube?

Eric:

It is probably a 27 inch tube. Zenith often added 1 to the screen size in their model numbers.

According to Sam's, that set uses a 27AP4A.

Unhappy

Adorable set. I hope somebody saves it.

Sadly, while Goshen is not too far away, and the set would fit beautifully in my breezeway (official "retro" room), it won't fit in a Prius

But it'll fit on top of a Prius!

You work on those cars for the city, don't you? I had forgotten that. I went nuts trying to help a lady with a problem in hers that the dealer couldn't fix. It would run fine at first, then the gas motor just stayed on all the time after about 5 miles, then if parked, the car would be dead. She wound up sending the car to another dealership, and they replaced the whole battery pack and a $2000 module at 1200 miles (warranty). Problem solved, I hope...

Back on thread: That's a really great Zenith. I've seen a 27" Zenith in a similar cabinet that carried the "Stratosphere" mark, which was the great Zenith radio of the 1930s. I wonder if this set has a Stratosphere badge on it someplace?

Unfortunately this one might have a weak crt as it has one of those "duz-all" picture boosters hooked to it. All in all its still a nice set!

Fancy CRT fryer

I guess that's a top line set? Is that the biggest screen Zenith had then? Funny red and green controls... makes me think they could be for the optional color adapter like those Admirals had.

There was no color TV when this Zenith was made, CBS' system having become extinct a couple years before. Besides, on a 27" screen the image would have to shrink to PIP dimensions to show through the window of a color wheel.

Neat set. Very rare, it was actually bought directly from zenith at the original plant! Wow. Must have been a zenith employee who orignally owned it.
