Murphy A168M British radio
I picked up this Murphy A168M British radio at a flea market last Saturday for $30. It is a 5 tube transformer powered set and appears to have standard broadcast and SW bands. This radio was not designed for the US market as it only runs on 220-240 volts. There was a step-up transformer included that will allow the radio to play on 110 volts. I've been seeing this radio at the flea market for months priced at $110. I was doing some "wheeling and dealing" with the owner and he told me to make him an offer. He was happy to get the $30 because it had been sitting there forever and he was trying to move some old merchandise in order to make room for new.
Has anyone ever seen this radio or have any information on it? |

Thats a pretty cool find. Also interesting that it made its way over to this side. Its not so common to find non-export model European sets on this side. German rigs made it over here a fair bit, but they usually had multi-voltage selectors on them so they worked fine here after changing the plug.
I found this site with some info. Clicking the model name gives you the schematic. http://www.murphy-radio.co.uk/dungeon/Dungeon3.html

If its the same company, they also made "boatanchors"-communications receivers- for the British Navy on subs after WW2. That model was the B40, & was rather peculiar looking, kinda looked like a portruding or "bay" window.

Hi,
Google Murphy Radios for lots of information on these fine UK made sets. They were among the best UK Radio sets. Very fine tone and reception. Visually pretty looking. They also made TV sets and Radiogrammes.
