Getting a Polish Radio...

Won a Diora "Calypso" couple nights ago offa You-Know-Where. Seller says it is from the 1959-60 period, it looks like the West German big blonde wood table sets of the period-Emuds, Sabas, Telefunkens, Grundigs. It apparently was made for the N. American market, the FM looks like it goes to 108, & has several setting for the voltage. Seller says it has the typical problems of a set this age-scratchy controls, etc. But I don't have a radio from Poland-or anything else from there, for that matter, so why not ? We shall see...-Sandy

I was looking at a Polish radio at the Kutztown radio gig a few months back. I'd have bought it, but the seller wasn't around. It was pretty much how you describe, looked just like any other number of late 50s European radios. I also wanted it just because Polish radios aren't something you find very often in the US. I actually left the meet with a Norelco (North American Phillps) and a Schaub-Lorenz non-export model.

Every radio I ever heard in Poland carried voices speaking in Polish. If you are getting one of those, I sure hope you can understand Polish!

Seriously, there is a lot of interesting tube gear in the former East-bloc countries. They continued making what we would consider old-fashioned gear long after the West moved on to newer designs, so your new acquisition might not be as old as it looks. Build quality varies, and sometimes disappoints a little. Still interesting stuff, though!

Yeah, that's the only thing I hate about buyin' on De Bay...You run the risk of getting a real "Pig-in-a-Poke". Still, this guy had good feedback, & the pics looked good, so I decided to take a chance. I've never really been "burned" on De Bay, but I have been "singed" a time or 2...

Hope the finish is in good shape. Many wooden Euro sets of that vintage have a nuclear polyurethane-like finish that is very difficult to restore.

The internals also tend to be cramped, with small components, compared to the average US set. Not a problem as long as you have good eyesight, steady hands, and patience :-)

Phil

Well, I got it in. FILTHY, & the wood-the finish is GONE on it. Went over it w/Scott's Liquid Gold, that helped it a bunch. Need to take the knobs off, & give 'em the Ivory Liquid/Toothbrush treatment. But, other than the "Diora" nameplare was broken, it was cosmetically in good shape. Operationally...That's another story. AM & SW don't work at all, oddly, the FM band sorta works. Still, I'm happy w/it...neay, oddball set that there CAN'T be too many of over here.
