I thought it was still down while it had been back for nearly a week due to a strange browser issue. By coincidence I switched from Chrome to Opera and voila, there's ARF. I find now that it's down again again.

So is it really? Or is the fault with my computer?

They tried the first upgrade/fix, and it didn't work. They then went back to the original server environment until they came up with a new plan. Apparently they're in the middle of the new upgrade, or a new crash.

In any event, it's not your browser.

Just curious what the difference between using a host company vs owning your own server?

It seems like it would be less hassle to let someone else handle the technical issues but maybe there are other reasons to have your own server, like cost & control maybe?

Just for laughs I tried to go over there, this is what I got: message_die() was called multiple times. This isn't supposed to happen. Was message_die() used in page_tail.php?
That was the only thing on the screen. LOL.

Cost would be one thing, but the convenience of letting someone else manage the technical details, perform constant backups, etc., is immeasurable.

I have had a company host my site for 13.5 years and can't remember suffering a minute of downtime. I pay them about $50/month.

That adds up over time, but on the other hand, devoting a computer to use as a server and spending zillions of hours maintaining the enterprise is also a cost.

Guess it depends on what you think your time is worth. Some people enjoy messing with that kind of thing, but not me

Well, the rec.antiques.radio+phono newsgroup on USENET is still alive and well.

If you don't have a newsgroup reader (I use Outlook Express), you can access that group via Google groups:

Cost is one thing but then you do like they do here...ADVERTISE..what I hear is that either these companies pay you to post there ad on your website or they pay you per click. I really wish they would go to a host site, no more down time would be nice

Why is it that the antique radio crowd doesn't seem, what's the word I'm looking for..... arrogant?, as the more conventional audio crowd? I love it here at the Karma, don't get me wrong, and you guys are sure great, but there sure seems to be a few snobs in some of the other Karma arena's. Oh, by the way. When is antique radio forum gonna get back on the air?

I'm guessing it's because the average age of the members is around 93.

Well that's a good comeback! If it makes you feel any better, I'm so young that my being here lowers the average median age level to 92!
