should i buy?, busted '54 Zenith

The guy wants 75, but i think i can get it for a third of that, as it has a busted tube. Busted as in the rear is snapped off.

Ive been looking for an early tv in this style for a while and this is the first thats come up. Possible restoration, or maybe i can just slide a 70s girls guts in her and move the controls.

It's entirely up to you.

To the general public, a mid-1950's TV set with a busted CRT is strictly trash, and I don't believe he would be able to sell it for any amount of money, unless he found the one person in the world who needed a particular part from the set and was rich enough not to care about price.

If he doesn't accept a very low offer from you, he will in all probability never sell it.

With few exceptions, B&Ws after about 1950 are considered "uncollectable", though I personally digress, and am trying to repair a 1956 Motorola myself.

If you can get it for $25, why not? Finding a crt could take some time; funny, seems like there are more TV's and parts up for sale in Washington state than their are collectors-at least that is my observation from watching on here. So, maybe that tube is right out there waiting for you!

I say that the idea that TV's that are NOT from the 40s are more or less worthless is an idea thats time has passed. There are a lot of interesting and beautiful sets all through the 50s. Enough time has passed now since the 40s, and you just don't see a lot of 50's stuff, like say 10 or 20 years ago. It certainly is not garbage, and not everyone can afford to have a basement full of "roundies."

Just my opinion.....

I just bought a 50s set this weekend, so I'm of the opinion if your having fun then that is all that matters. Some people enjoy searching for parts and saving something that was headed for the junk pile. I would only buy it if it was complete with a decent cabinet.
