RCA CTC-140 Blurry Corner
Picked up an otherwise nice RCA CTC-140 console. The picture isn't bad, but the focus is "bad" on the lower left corner. It's mainly noticable if there is text. Has anyone else run into this problem, and is there a fix? I liked the fact that it is a stereo set and has a ton of inputs. Also like the cabinet style better than the older System 3 I had been using. However, the Zenith has a picture that blows this one out of the water. (which is surprising as those 25" tri-focus tubes weren't that good as they aged)
*ugh.. I see I posted this in the wrong forum. Meant to post in S.S. Sorry! Last edited by jstout66; 06-02-2009 at 11:56 PM. Reason: wrong forum |

Can you tell if there is color fringe (misconvergence) around text, or is it a pure focus problem?
if it is specific to a corner only, there may be a slight possibility that its a CRT mask defect.

there is misconvergence around the text. It uses one of those flat screen "trinitron" like pixture tubes.
I purchased it at Goodwill, so could only plug it in to see if it powered up. I also liked that it is a "Dimensia" model, which I think was the top of the line for RCA at that time. Was surprised they put out a console under that name as I thought Dimensia only had componet items. The cabinet on this one is identical to a Colortrac 2000 I once had. I'll have to see if I can get used to the picture, otherwise Zenith may have to come back up from the basement. |

As Andy says, those are very tricky on the corner convergence, and any loosening of the yoke, or weakening of corner magnets can cause that problem. You might be able to improve it by placing a small (dime-sized or smaller) magnet around the corner of the tube, and moving it around, rotating it, flipping it, etc., until you find the best spot. Then glue it in place. Just to mention, the cause of the problem is most likely that the TV was banged, and the shadow mask is bent slightly. I saw 1000s of cases of that in flat tubes after the 1994 earthquake.

it's kind of hard to explain, but it really isn't misconverged, nor does it have an impurity spot. In the lower left corner it is slightly out of focus, and mainly noticable when there is text, like when I have the cable on screen menu guide up. The printing is distorted and out of focus.
I'm getting used to the picture, but it's taking awhile. Like I said, the Zenith that I was using prior has a fantastic picture that is so sharp it cuts like a knife. So far, the Dimensia's pros outweigh its cons. |

I have seen this too, I have an RCA CTC-121 that has a strong tube but is a bit blurry in two corners. I have seen several other RCAs do it as well, more so than other brands. The early 90s ones all did it or do by now it seems.
