1965 Magnavox Console

I think this Magnavox 23" color stereo console was 1965 ?
Heavy, 6 ft long, beautiful end speaker "weave" grille. Had side firing 15" woofers + horns (1kHz x/over) firing at 45 degrees each end.

Had the set working in the mid 80s - had pastel like colors ( a characteristic of Magnavox kine phosphors ?) Chassis/tube unfortunately long removed during move but cabinet saved (1980's rationale)

I've worked on and seen a few maggies with the dreaded 23EGP22 in 'em. Not sure about any "firsts", but maybe whatever available models at the time..
I'd gladly take a maggie roundie though!

What is the story with that kine ? So it wasn't just me noticing a strange chromaticity - pretty looking picture, OK focus, but emphasis on red/green and lacking some gamut depth - somewhat "pastel" effect ?

Magnavox used a circuit called Chromatone (if memory serves me right). It caused a sepia tint that some people loved (I hated). My Magnavox has it and I keep it turned off. Once set up, I find Maggies can give a very good picture. They use pretty much RCA color ciruitry. Their PC boards can be a challange and they do need proper setup. I have repaired many years ago and never had complaints about their color. Over the years, I find Magnavox converges better than most.
Now, the GE KE II chassis is a different story.......

A 23EGP in a Maggie? I guess I should be thankful I never ran across one while having worked at a Maggie dealer and an independent shop in the good old days.

That nice avocado tinted escutheon measures 22.75" diag and the mounts behind it are close in, so it must have been a "23".

Remember that the old 25" tubes (from the 60s) actually measured 23" once installed in the set. (they measured 25" from the outer edge of the crt) I'd guess that the 23EGP22 would have measured more like 21".

I'd suspect that in '65 if they were using a '25' it would have been sourced from either RCA or maybe Sylvania; did anyone make the 23EGP aside from National Video? I know the Motorolas that used them were well known for a sort of pastel color.

You are right, I found this sticker on the back (pix) .

So this was a "25 inch" model with 22.75" diag actual picture.

sams 887-2 is a model with the 23EGP....dated 5-67.

Believe me, this is one I should have avoided...back in the day!! I retrofitted it with a 25AP/XP22 Motorola kit. We were discussing this on another thread about someone selling one of those "kits"..

Should've answered this one earlier but here goes. Those of you that have been around long enough can correct me but here's my take on these tubes..
The 23EGP is just a structurally weak tube, I've always referred to them as a "glorified" black and white tube!! Rebuilders in the day wouldn't touch 'em. And not too long ago Doug had the misfortune of one imploding while he was attempting cataract surgery on one.
This would be a good question for Scotty at Hawkeye too!!

Maybe this TV was a retrofit because that's an unusual sticker on the back indicating the types of 25" that are compatible
