NICE! But a bit pricey, it'll probably still sell though. I would love to be the one to power it up after all these years, I hope whoever does, does it correctly. It would be a shame to fry that thing.

Electrically you would have to treat it just like anything else, planning on new electrolytics and lots of tinkering. You can assume there was a reason the set was retired in the first place. (It wasn't all that ancient in '71) Could be the crt, the flyback...or could be a bad tube that was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Anyway, looks very clean and with the remote a very desirable set. Out of my league.

Does anyone think that we could arrange a pony express on this thing? If so, I'll buy it.

No, I wish. It ended with no bids and is now relisted. I asked them what they would want for a buy it now but haven't received a response yet.

Still no sale and they will not come off of 800. I guess no one is close enough that is willing to pay that much. Almost all the other fifties color sets go for at least that much when in that condition, especially a remote set.

Hello all,
I’m new to the forum but not to antique radio or TV. I was lucky enough to purchase the RCA 21-rc-8985 that is the subject of this thread at a great price. It’s not my first antique TV but it is my first color set. The details which come from the niece of the original owner are as follows: The set has been unplugged and sitting idle since her uncle died in 1971. The den of the home was his domain and the door was closed after his death by his wife who wanted to keep it just as he left it. She has recently passed away. The set was purchased new in Atlanta, though no place of purchase documentation was found. The condition of the finish is excellent. It’s a real mahogany veneer cabinet instead of the applied grain finish. All original knobs are present. The remote device was kept with the set and is in great shape. It contains the correct VS 304 battery with no corrosion damage. An added bonus was finding the original owner’s manual and it too, is in good shape. I’ve removed the back to look around and everything is still intact though dusty as to be expected. The RCA brand CRT which I’ve not yet tested may be a replacement as evidenced by scrapes around the mounting nuts. There is no number visible near the base and the rest of the crt is shielded covering any paper labels that might exist. It’s had several tubes replaced as well but the condition of the chassis is great with no rust. Being kept in the house has allowed it to survive quite well. The flyback is clean with no signs of overheating or wax melt visible. Once some new electrolytic and other capacitors are installed I’ll power it up and see what else needs to be done. I’ll keep everyone posted. |

Welcome-and congratulations! It's great that you got the history behind it-sounds like it could be an easy restoration.

Hey everyone,
At long last I’ve gotten the chance to do some work on this set. I brought up the line voltage slowly on a variac while listening for any strange sounds after a thorough cleaning and re-cap of the chassis. At 90 volts I had a raster after the thermal switch clicked in. Once up to 115 volts a little tweaking here and there and I was rewarded with the picture below. Still a way to go to get optimum picture quality but hey, I’m happy so far. As I said in my original post, this is my first color set. I have the service literature but there are a number of things I’m unfamiliar with when it comes to setup. The color sets I serviced in the late 70’s were way different than this jewel. For good measure I’ve installed new focus rectifier, HO, damper, HV rectifier and regulator tubes along with a few others as needed. The purity and convergence look pretty good considering that the focus is still a little soft with no range of the control left. Same goes for the drive control. Still a line in the picture at the end of the control range. I suspect there may be some resistors off value as I’ve not checked those yet. After running for about 30 minutes the left side of the raster was pulled in about ½ inch and HV regulation wasn't too good. Fortunately there were no red plates in the HO or damper tubes. I’ll spend this weekend delving deeper into these issues so hopefully I’ll have more news soon. |
