I am sure this kind of stuff happens all the time... phone calls and e-mails are easily trumped by cash in hand. After an hour plus drive, one of my phone deals went this way:

Bing Bong... owners wife answers the door...
Hi ! I am here to pick up the TV in CL.
Sorry the TV has been sold.
Yes, I'm the guy that bought it over the phone about 2 hours ago.
No... you are the guy that is going to be angry !
Door shuts.

Cash talks, and there really are no rules in a venue like craigslist or a garage sale. Have you ever been at a swap meet and said "I'll take that," then had someone reach over your shoulder with a fistful of dollars and offer the seller more? Some times you get the item, some times it goes home with the buttinsky.

Eric has a point about keeping mum until an item's in your hand. For all you know, a seller might read the chatter here and suddenly decide it's worth a lot more than they thought.

I'm sorry to hear it ended this way. Maybe Randy doesn't post anymore but he might still read the forum. Hopefully he discovered it independently and only the seller is the jerk.

I guess I was lucky that I had an honorable seller with the CTC-5. I first talked about the set on VK not being sure that I wanted it. Then I decided to get it and when I made the deal with the seller he took the listing down within minutes of agreeing on the price. He then held it until I picked it up.

The '49 Sylvania I picked up from Atlanta Georgia didn't go as well. But, that was half my friend's fault who was going to pick it up. I eventually convinced the seller to let me have it because of the expense I had gone to in preparing to restore the set expecting to get it, and going with a reliable transport company that made it zero work for him to ship it.

I'm also thankful that you still agreed to sell me your Sylvania after at least one other person expressed interest after you offered it to me. In that case though the other interested party just misunderstood the posting and didn't realize he was trying to buy it from under me.

The OP is a dare. If the ad were for an item I wanted and could realistically get my hands on first, my thought bubble response to the final sentence of the OP would be "oh yeah...?"

Fire at will.

Guess loyalty and honor don't matter here, eh??

Not to some, anyway. "get what you can--while the gettin's good"--all that matters, I guess. Doesn't matter that i had ALREADY "made a deal" for this set--andf I am SURE the one who STOLE it from me KNEW THAT!!

I DO honor a "previous deal" as was mentioned. i COULD have maybe made more than I got for that Sylvaina...but I made a deall...and i STUCK TO IT!! My word means more to me that "money talks"...or "I did the best thing I felt I could business--wise" as the guy called to RUB IT IN TO ME after work!!

I think this thread has gone as far as it can without getting out of hand so it's closed.
