DuMont CRT Mounting rubber?
I need to find a suitable substitute for the CRT mounting rubber on an Andrea that used a DuMont tube, I have a Crosley that needs some too.
DuMont, Crosley, Andrea and other clones all used this. The condition usually varies from melted tar all over the face of the tube to rotted beyond use. It's a medium stiffness rubber foam I think, maybe .25" thick X 2.5-3.0" wide, black to absorb light and it extends over the tube like a hood so the usual double sided tape wont be satisfactory. Any ideas where to get something like this? (in small quantity) |

Have you tried Ace Hardware? They have foam with peel-n-stick adhesive on one side that might work...

you can also try a model airplane shop, wing saddle tape. it not that wide, but you could lay down some strips I think is about 1/4 wide IIRC. Adhesive on one side about 1/8 thick.

Someone over on A.R.F. suggested Black neoprene foam from an old Wet Suit, I see those occasionally at thrift stores so I might be able to get hold of one.
Also now that I know what it's called I might be able to find some. |

LOL! I work at a pool, I could send you 30 pairs of used wet suits if you want...

It looks something like the foam they sell for putting under camper tops on pickups. Auto parts & hardware stores usually have it. But the brands I've seen are grayish in color, and might not be wide enough.

McMaster-Carr has this material as stock item(s)
I've used the following from McMaster-Carr both in my Dumont and RCA sets:
1/4" X 2" X 36" 10A Neoprene rubber #3207K13 $15.22 each 1/8" X 2" X 36" 10A Neoprene rubber #3207K12 $10.16 each The 10A is the measure of softness and it pretty much matches what you'd expect a manufacturer to use when mounting a CRT. With the 36" length, you'll probably end up with enough for another set! Good luck. |

Try your local hardware store, ask for a replacement garage door seal. The one that I bought was "L" shaped (maybe a 1/2" lip), ~2+" wide, ~1/4" thick, ~16 feet long. Decent neoprene rubber that had a smooth finish, cheap. Frickin' lifetime supply...

Some good suggestions, I like the Mc Carr Masters Foam and it sounds right except I need it to be 3" wide (measured it today) I don't see that particular soft foam in that width. I could double up on it since the band is also 3" wide.
I went to Ace Hardware and couldn't find anything that would work, maybe I should try Home Depot or similar. |
