Noise inverters generally are supposed to detect pulses that are bigger than sync (in modulation-land) and therefore more negative than sync (in video and sync-separator land), and invert them so they don't affect the sync separator. Probably what was happening was that the noise inverter was trying to invert or at least clip the sync itself.

I watch mine every night for Hitchcock, then Mike hammer on sunday nights.
