Here is a video I made of a radio I think is very similar to the Motorola in question:

It seems to have good performance to me, plus the fact it is a transformer powered set means it works well and safely with external equipment, and it has auxiliary input, tuner output, and external speaker jacks. We are currently using it as an amplifier/speaker with a DVD player (in addition to as a radio). I had the problem with a burned lead on a resistor too.

I got the 6DA5 tuning eye tube from ESRC vacuum tubes.
