I see how it works now and I'm dying to try it. When you said RV refrigerator cooling units I got a clear picture of way it will look and act. I may do a thread on this some time as I don't think many people do it this way and I'm sure it would provide a lot more protection than peanuts, cardboard stuffing and double boxing.
UPS and probably Fedex too have what seems like to me a strange way of determining price. The box size can stay the same for a rather large change in weight and the price stays the same. When the box size increases, the price goes up even if the weight is less than the heavier small box. My point is if one can keep the box size small, no second box, then the price for shipping will automatically be less. I have used the peanut double box method and not only is it more work and cost more due to size, it really doesn't provide any more protection than a single box using the expanded foam method. You might want to check uline.com for the instapack foam packets. It's a pouch with the 2 parts of the foam separated inside the pouch. When you rupture the internal divider, the chemicals mix. What you do is activate one, put it in the box, place your item in, activate another, and place it on top and then close and tape the box up. It contours to the object you put in. But if I remember correctly it requires some sort of machine to use them.
I've seen alot of motors and more sensitive items shipped using this, and basicly you would really have to beat the hell out of it to damage the item. Last edited by stusnyder; 04-10-2011 at 04:17 PM. Reason: spelling |

We use the Instapack at work. The machine is a heater that warms the packets before you use them. I think you might be able to just put them in warm water as a substitute. The machine is for convenience.
