Atwater-Kent model 40 queston?
This may sound like a really dumb queston, but I can't get the volume control knob off, so that I can get the inerds out of the box.I tried to pull and even pried it off the shaft but it's not going to happen without breaking something. I have two Atwater-Kent model 40 radios and on both radios, I can't budge it, I don't see any set screws. Is the volume control knob suppose to slide off the shaft?

I seem to recall form disassembling my 40 that the volume knob should be left on, and that the entire bakelite ring around it is attached (only) to the chassis. If I recall right one can pull the knob and the ring around it out with the radio chassis.

I also have to fix the tuning band, it brole right were the hole is, could not find any on ebay yet. I may just have to fix it, try soldering it up, I think if I cut the .010 feeler quage the brass .010 and cut to width then drill the hole and solder it over the tuning band.

Well, I have about 4 or 5 sets in the bone pile, which one did you break? the long one or the short one?

I broke the short one, the one next to the volume control.

Fixed the broken band right were the hole is by using the brass part of a feeler qauge, drilled a small hole in the feeler quage first then cut it with metal snips and then after cleaning and sanding the metal parts that need to be soldered and careful alighnment of the broken band, it soldered up and is fixed.
The repaired part of the band is a lot thicker then all the rest, and that should not matter, since that is on the spool with the pin on it, that stays on and never leaves the spool, even when turning it as far to the left or right. |

Original caps after 100 years, still working.
I powered the radio up with a variac and eventually got it up to 110 volts and nothing was happening, after 10 minutes I came back and it was light up, what a surprise really, figuring the caps in that radio is close to 100 years old.
Just curious if I should wire in new caps underneath anyways? Since it all worked, I was just woundering if the Atwater-Kent caps had a better paper insulating material in it, that keeps it from shorting, quite amazing that it is still working after 100 years. |
