I've done that, but not with a horizontal output. I needed an oscillator for the BFO in an old Hallicrafters, and rather than go out and buy one I did exactly that with the 8 pin base from the dead tube and connected a 6C4 to it. Still use it. One of these days I'm restore it to correct. Maybe.
