David Sarnoff's World Fair speech

He fails to announce his intent to hog every piece of technology, which he stole from others, and further he fails to announce his intent to murder Edwin H. Armstrong by driving him to suicide while strong-arming him into giving up his inventions, which Sarnoff had to have.

"So run out and buy one of my 441 line B&W TVs with AM sound. Dont bother with that silly FM radio thing, that's a fad."
"What, the FCC mandated FM sound for TV? #%$^%$@#%^&*&^%&&!"

Thanks for posting that, Captain! I did enjoy that. It helps to hear somebody talk, to really hear what they sounded like, and I'd ever had the chance to hear Sarnoff. I had speculated that he might have something of a Russian accent but obviously not.

One of my Zenith radios has a gold sticker on the back acknowledging "Armstrong..." and his great inventionThe book RCA by Robert Sobel gave a vivid description of Sarnoff, this fills in the gaps for me, anyway. Thanks Captain! |

The General was a REAL Piece O' Work...I like one of his admittedly ATTRIBUTED quotes, but I can easily hear him sayin' it-"I don't GET ulcers, I GIVE 'em..." You can only wonder & SHUDDER what the poor bstrds in RCA labs went thru developing color TV...I'd bet RCA wasn't a fun place to be after Ampex "Skunked" them w/the world's 1st videotape machine in '56, either...

I get ulcers reading more & more of his business practices, and his ever-expanding victim list.

Seems like I remember reading that he had a stroke, or some sort of debilitating illness, & was unable to do much the last several years of his life, except communicate by Morse code...And, of course, RCA, for all its power & splendor, really didn't live a whole lot longer than The General did, when you think about it...

![]() ![]() I think RCA used quad detectors for FM demod a lot in their TV sets, maybe that was a workaround to avoid Armstrong's patents? Did Zenith TVs acknowledge Armstrong?
