1948 zenith georgian radio console

hi all, anyone know anything about this type of radio? it has a record player fm1 fm2 and i think am also. its all original and the price was right at 20.00. i also got a very early solid state ge portible am radio that takes the old type 9v battery and it has a very weird speaker without a magnet but rather a pin that goes from the cone to a coil. i get sound thats bearly able to here with a new 9v battery, maybe a bad cap or something or transistor.

hello timmy,

the fm1 , fm2 are both prewar and postwar FM bands. prewar band is obsolete, but is cool to have set , prewar band phased out by about 1950 I think by reading history. PICTURES please!!!!!!

well heres the finished 1948 georgian zenith, all radio bands work and the radio came with a record and its a 78 speed which is good because i had no records to try this phono but it also works great and the automatic works as well. looks like they only had 78 speed back in 1948 because there is no way to change the record speed.

The 33-1/3 RPM long playing record was introduced by Columbia in 1948, and the 45 RPM by RCA in 1949. Your radio was just ahead of this. Very nice radio!

I've got a Philco model 50-1720 console, circa 1949, and it has the modern FM band, plus the 33 RPM speed on the record changer. Separate tone arms for 78 RPM and 33 RPM. Weird mix of miniature, octal, and locktal tubes in the radio. Still have the original owner's manual with the 1949 copywrite date on it.

nice set

Very nice radio, I had same chassis, similiar with photo finish on wood cabinet. This looks like upgraded cabinet. Many of these sets when photo finish went bad.really weird to see zenith went cheap, sets are hard to find. Can't find these sets too much, photo finish looked even faded being exposed to the sun. I have only seen one really nice photo finish set. Probably never exposed the sun. Refinished?

Some postwar radios & TVs had a mixture of tube types according to what the mfr could get. There was a big demand after WWII and then came the Korean war with another drain on parts.
