Flyback Arc - Proscan PS36125/CTC197CG - Videokarma.org TV - Video

As my wife was watching it, the generally hated but my beloved Proscan PS36125/CTC197CG died spectacularly with buzing, crackling sounds and lightning flashes and a thin high brightness horizontal line in the CRT, ozone smell, then shutdown. I removed the case and turned it on which caused the relay to click 3 times with visible arcing at the top of the flyback transformer across the thin gap between the winding and the HV lead to the CRT. I cleaned off the carbon and turned it on with the same result. Is this flyback repairable? If not, I have located an OEM replacement flyback for approximately $40 including shipping. Are there other components I should replace? I bought this TV used about 5 years ago for $150, Is it worth fixing?

The flyback was a high failure part in that chassis. There's a chance that you could patch the leak with silicon; but, it probably won't last long. If the picture was still decent; then, I'd say it's worth a new transformer.

Check that the horizontal output transistor isn't shorted or otherwise blown. And various solder joints around the horiz circuits.

I got the "GUTS" out of the cabinet. The circuit board is in a plastic carrier which I've tried to get it to slide out of but it won't budge. There's a white plastic rivet in the middle of the board that appears to prevent the removal of the circuit board which I've tried to remove by squeezing the tabs and pushing down on it but it won't budge either. How do I get the circuit board out of the plastic carrier? Also, I don't want to damage the wires connected to the flyback so how do I remove them?

I have had to slightly flex the plastic carrier to loosen it to remove the chassis. Also, on some there is a 1/4 inch hex in front with a plastic retainer. It can hold the chassis in.
The flyback on those may come as a kit. Don't leave out any steps as failure will result immediatley. My old boss was notorius for just putting in the new flyback. As he said, the mods aren't needed.
Smoke and a new flyback turned old.
Those are great sets! If it has the tuner on board (PC board tuner, not a separate silver box) do the tuner wrap repair. It usually will rear it's ugly head after any work is done as it breaks up the solder connections on the tuner from flexing.

It has the separate TV tuner in a metal box. I love this TV, it has so many features that I use: PIP, Closed-Caption, multiple inputs, a great picture, etc. Just before the flyback went, I bought a brand new OEM remote for only $19 delivered. The flyback I was able to find is an RCA OEM that comes in the original box but only the flyback, no other parts. I will need to reuse the wires connected to the flyback so I have to remove them but I don't know how.

The flyback definitely cannot be repaired.

I cleaned out the blast hole, removed the burnt carbonized plastic and deposit next to it. I melted a piece of the same type of plastic into the hole and spread it evenly so it was completely sealed then wrapped it with multiple wraps of Scotch self-sealing high voltage insulating silicone rubber tape used for taping high voltage substation transformer connections, reconnected everything and turned the tv on. Immediately, there was a high pitched screech and an arc appeared exactly where it had been before, the high voltage had punctured the same place in the flyback housing.

Make sure the horizontal output transistor is not shorted. This is common with this set when flyback failure occurs. I don't remember these sets having the problems of the later 203 chassis exccept for an occaisional flyback.
I have had a number of customers with the 197's and can't say they were a bad set. With the exception of tuner wrap troubles, a good # are still in service never having been repaired.
Since you are getting an OEM flyback I would say go for it!
It's too nice of a set to put to sleep!

Also check the solder joints underneath one of the blue or gray box style capacitors near the flyback.

I echo the sentiment of checking/replacing the horizontal output transistor.

The board can be removed with force, it's wedged in that plastic tray pretty tight.

MAT Electronics on the east coast or Nesco electronics on the west coast can provide you a good quality aftermarket flyback if you call them up with the complete chassis number. They're usually between 20-30 dollars. If you order a flyback, replace the transistor too, at a cost of a couple additional dollars.

Sadly, I decided to send my dearly beloved deceased Proscan 36" TV to its final resting place, the recycling depot. I did get the circuit board out of its carrier and was going to buy an OEM replacement flyback from eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/237506-RCA-F...:X:RTQ:US:1123 but the seller's picture of the flyback didn't show any wires and I couldn't get the wires off the blown flyback. I had sent the eBay seller a message asking if there are wires with the new flyback but he took too long to reply so I thought that meant it came without wires, etc. By the time he replied, stating that the flyback comes with the wires, etc., as a kit, the TV was gone. The kit cost less than $20 plus $20 shipping, a lot less than the $75 it cost to have the very large and heavy Proscan taken away. If the seller had replied to my question sooner, I would have fixed the Proscan. Until I get a new Panasonic Viera 50 or 55 ST60, in April, I am watching TV on an old 20" Sony Trinitron or on my tv tuner equipped widescreen HP media laptop. Thanks to everyone for your help and encouragement to fix the Proscan.

I have the set EXACTLY ther same BUT in 32" in size.

I also replaced a flyback in my set about six years ago.

Cost me nearly $100.00 (in Canadain Funds)

It did comes in a kit plus a Horizontal Output Transistor.

Yes, My set still in working order.

Foe a Few Hot Canadian Summer I unplugged the set for the season.

I wil have to find the picture of my set that just got a new flyback.

P.S. My set is PS32125 with a CTC197CG

Too bad you junked it. The flyback would probably be all that was wrong.
