Right now I've got a little 6" modern permmag with a random output transformer from my parts box. I've got an RCA 100 that I could try but I don't want to sacrifice its original cord by cutting off the tips and putting on a phone plug. I think what I really need to find though is a few thousand ohm set of phones.

I had some of those phone plugs years ago and just looked in three jars full of phone plugs but have none like that any more. I had bought some in the fifties from Allied. They have a larger plastic barrel than the usual plugs used today: unscrew the barrel and there are two screw terminals inside where you can slide the phone tip into a groove and then tighten the screws. I used these for 2000 ohm phones for years. Someone here may one in their stash they could send you.
At any rate, I'll bet the modern speaker sounds better than the old magnetic drive one.

Golly, you got that for 10 bucks? Amazing.
I will have to look into those xmfr cores from AES...I have a big old TRF set with a blown interstage.

Those phone plug adapters were real common in the 20s. I have a small collection of them since there appear to have been quite a variety of them. I don't see them come up for sale much- I don't think most people know what they are when they find them.
You could probably rig up something with a modern mono phone plug attached to a pair of round crimp fittings that your headphone tips could fit into. |
