Signs of a Failing PictureTube
What are some signs and symptoms of a CRT that is about to go out?
My 1991 Zenith has an issue but don't know if it is to do with the picture tube? When I sometimes turn it on the shade of yellow on my meter bar of my converter box is the normal golden yellow color it has always had. The next time you turn the set on it may be a real bright yellowish color. This can give a greenish yellow tint to faces when this happens. If this happens I just turn the set off for a few minutes and then power it back on and it is okay then. Also, seem to have some wavy lines appearing in the background at times more noticeable with certain colors on the picture tube. |

I can't post pictures as our stupid photo program that we have doesn't work very good. We can take really good pictures with the digital camera but can't get them to transfer into a file. I was told the issue with the Zenith may be some bad capacitors on the Main Board and or needing to be adjusted by a repairman? I adjusted the G2 and that helped the wavy line issue quite a bit as it made for a darker back screen. When I had the Main Board replaced this April the repairman at that time left the back screen way too bright and caused the colors and pictures to wash out alot. It is now much more like it was when it was new.

Could be the CRT, however Zenith was known to have intermittent color output transistors that would open up at times. Sounds like your lacking the blue color. The transistors sit in a row with heat sinks mounted on them usually toward the back of the chassis. Usually the transistors are a round job with the heat sink pushed on to them. When I ran into these sets I would put some silicone heat sink compound between the transistor and the heat sink to help them better dissipate the heat. The transistors also plugged into a socket for easy removal.
