Plastic cover in front of CRT

I have an old 5" black and white TV from the 80's, and it's plastic face is all scuffed up.

I popped it open, and can easily remove the CRT to take out the plastic to polish it, but the CRT says it has implosion protection. Um, if it does, why the plastic screen?

Can I just remove the plastic screen and call it a day? I'd imagine it'd be FAR sharper and brighter, cause the plastic is tinted too.

It's a Unisonic XL900B.

Here's the condition of the plastic cover.

And the CRT itself.

Dont need it, only for looks & so light wont wash out the pix.
Only thing is there will prob. be a gap between CRT & cabinet.

All done, looks SO much nicer than it did before.. Sorry I don't have a source hooked up, but you can see the scanlines quite clearly despite it being only 5".

Was there a gap between the crt and bezel after removing the plastic cover? I always hated those plastic covers as they scratch too easily. That is one reason I like the Panasonic five inch sets, most of them do not have a plastic cover.

Yea there was a gap, but it's barely noticeable unless you really look.

This really is looking nice. See, it looks like there's no gap.

But look close with light, and you'll see the gap.
