My 36" Sony CRT set is DYING..

But its been a GOOD 10 year-at least- run..Green pretty much gone... Very blurry, & cycles black screen/on several cycles when I turn it on. It weighs 278 LBS, I'm too old/weak to wrestle it, & have NO technical/troubleshooting ability..Boo Hoo..Sic Transit Gloria...

Might be able to find somebody local with a CRT rejuvinator to buy the jug some time. Otherwise it is time to cue up Londonderry Air (aka. Danny Boy).

Up side is that most 'consumers' hate CRT sets which opens up the potential of getting a replacement set of the same model for free...Might even get it delivered for free if they force folks in your area to recycle 'em for a big fee...

If that don't work maybe it is time to take your Zenith color roundy to your tech Terry(?) and put it on living room duty after it comes back...

It has nothing to do with being older mate, so don't worry about that. I couldn't come close to lifting it in spite of my being 24 years your junior. Of course I have the Imperial Crown of hand trucks now in regards to size, so a set like this would be no problem once its actually on there.

Oh yeah man, you'll be able to swap in a like-new picture tube if you cared enough to do it / or have it done! These sets are out there en masse, as has been mentioned-Often for free !

The way I see it: Even if you swap in a set identical to this one, it will work out the same in your system. If yours cannot be diagnosed properly due to its huge weight and size. after Sandy my 35" kv35s40 had to be hauled up a flight of stairs to the trash. it was found face-down about 20 feet from where it was originally.
I have a tendency to rescue the BPC sets within reason; meaning that I wil maintain 1 or 2 of this type of TV in addition to my vintage collection.

They are versatile with more modern formats i.e.; DVD and DTV.

Too bad you don't have decent thrift stores around there. They get those heavy beasts all the time. Sometimes they even deliver.

If you want to bother there is a low value resistor in
series with the filament. Usualy on the CRT board & usually 1-3 ohms
Jump it out & you get a little more fil voltage. Works
good sometimes. Be forewarned ! these sets were also known
for intermitent H-K shorts in the blue & it may trigger it.

Wouldn't it be nice if the driver transistor on the CRT socket board was dying, and causing your lack of color?

What's the model number, Sandy? I may have a tube, from a set I junked in the spring - else I may have some service hints that may lead to a bad cap or two.

Cheers,

I have the same, or similar, Sony in my basement that someone gave me a long time ago due to intermittent power up. I'm 36 and it was all me and the guy with me could do to pick that set up and move it. It's size and weight is the main reason I haven't cracked it open, even though I have a pretty good idea what's wrong with it.
