The Star battery was hidden in a small black rectangular box inside the tuner chassis. Tuning became difficult when it failed as the set needed a allocation number assigned to the selected frequency. In other words, number 4 showing on the readout could have been channel 9 RF wise. There was a switch that was turned on to program the slots. I cant remember how many slots there were but each one had to be done then stored in memory. The later Star sets were pretty much standard keyboard types. I'm talking early Star System.
BUT! I would do them all day compared to some of the late model sets with shutdown circuitry that makes some (Funai) sets terrors to repair.

I remember the early STAR sets with the three colored levers that were used to program the channels. The last one I saw was a T995 chassis console that was in a thrift store. I played with it for a few minutes in an attempt to program it and eventually gave up. Before that set, I had a 19" T991 with that system. That was before I knew as much about TV's and I junked it (it had a power supply problem).

Interesting. I never saw a SS W-G set that I can remember.
Latest ones were the hybrids with modules. Seemed to be well built
but suffered from a low grade CRT. Wonder what they would look like
with a Zenith or RCA black matrix jug ?

i had a wells gardner solid state set.it was a trutone branded and it had a rauland crt.had a fine look much like a zenith of the era.this set was exceptional.i also owned a wells gardner built hybrid combo that had the best stereo ever.it was loud and clear.the television was a hybrid, again with a rauland crt.picture was excellent save for the dreaded "green halo".distracting to me.it was in the beginning stages and back then irratated me.now,i wouldnt be able to see it.i personally like wells gardner sets.they seem to have been well built with pretty good crts.the raulands looked good but i ve heard that they didnt have a long life
