An Admiral 19A11 brought back to life!

My Grandfather picked this set up for me at an antique store. It's complete with a nice cabinet, back, not missing any knobs, but the front screen is a bit yellowed. I've replaced all the electrolytic capacitors, and most of the wax capacitors. I couldn't stand it anymore, so I had to power it up to see what I had, and it worked! Also found a couple of weak tubes, and replaced brittle, and soldering iron damaged wires. It looks like the bank of 6000 volt capacitors had been changed once before along with a few more throughout the chassis. I still need to check the resistors, and clean the contrast control. It seems to be working pretty well at this time. I ran it about an hour, and the picture seemed to improve with use. Sound is very loud, and clear with occasional minimal buzzing. It has a Sylvania 7JP4 CRT installed, not sure if that is the original.

I've never read/heard reports of anybody who has one of these l'il guys being unhappy w/it.... They're TROUPERS, & surprisingly good performers. One of these was my 1st vintage set, what got me started in this wacky & wonderful hobby..

Nice job. Those are among the best-performing 7-inch TVs. While you're at it, I'd replace the remaining wax paper capacitors for peace of mind.

It's not unusual for an old picture tube to improve somewhat when it is first used after a long dormant period. Sometimes they initially look almost dead on a CRT tester, but "wake up" when you supply them with filament voltage for a while.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys! Just waiting on one .001mfd cap that I forgot to add to my order, then the recap will be finished. Also checked, and replaced out of tolerance resistors. I added a 250 pfd capacitor, and 220k resistor to clear up the retrace lines, and it's a success! Two things that would be awesome finds are a better face plate/bezel for the crt. I got mine ok shape with metal polish and Novus, but it is still quite yellowed and a little cloudy. I'm not sure if wet sanding more material off the surface will get it clearer, or if the yellowing is all the way through the material. It must have been exposed to a lot of sunlight. Also a stronger 7jp4 crt, or even better a nos. It's very dim at first, but comes up enough after about 5-10 minutes to watch in a dim room. If the brightness is turned up too much the image goes negative. I've played it for about 10-12 hours, and everything seems stable at this time. At least now I can watch a movie while finishing the detail on the little squares where the speaker is!

Admiral 19A11 gets a strong 7JP4

Well I took a risk on a parts donor set, and came out alright. I bought the set for the clear plastic screen, but the real surprise is it contained a strong 7JP4! After transplanting those two items, it's nice and bright with the lights on in the room. I can tell now it needs some alignment, but I don't have the equipment to do that, but it looks and sounds pretty decent, so I'll just enjoy it for now! The replacement crt has a faint vertical line burned in the center, so perhaps once it lost vertical deflection it got retired. It has capacitors as recent as 1966, and the crt is a RCA, so I guess it had a long time in operation. I do like this little tv!

You know, sometimes you need to come out a winner. Seems as though you did and congratulations. Getting a good 7JP4 is always a bonus.

I have done a Motorola VT71 and have one of these Admirals in queue. You have lit a fire under me and thanks!

Great job...
