I.D. this set please.
Christmas morning in the 50's. This table model set was several years old at this time. Nifty '55 Pontiac pedal car.

Looks to me like a 1949 Crosley 9-407

Those people had good taste in TV's. That was a good quality set with continuous tuner and tuning eye.

Yes, Crosley, the set in the picture looks like they took the mask out to get more picture?

Lucy & Ricky motoring to Hollywood in one probably didn't hurt sales either.

I think the mask is there, it's just the angle that the picture was shot, just as we can see the edge of the CRT in the picture you posted.

I see the bezel in the picture but i don't see the white mask behind it, unless someone painted it black.
I found a slightly clearer version of the picture. |

It could be Eric's set is a 10" and the one in the picture is a 12". The set is a Dumont chassis rebadged as Crosley.....IIRC the Stromberg-Carlson badged version of this chassis existed in 10" and 12" variants that both used the same cabinet with a small white inner mask added on 10" sets to keep the edges of the 10" CRT from showing.
If the Crosley was only sold as a 10" then maybe an enterprising owner/tech swapped in a 12" tube and removed the white mask to gain another 2" of screen size.

Nope, it's a 12", 12JP4 Dumont tube in fact.

According to the program, "Automobiles" on the History Channel, They asssigned one of the vice presidents of GM, to try to restructure the division to profitability, or they were going to discontinue them. The '54 model styling was very dated and still used the old flat-head straight eight and six volt electrical system.
Of course everyone knows what happened the next year! |
