New to forum

Hello Everyone, My name is John, and I've just joined the forum. I
have a CTC-15ish Silvertone 21" that has been my primary set off and on
since about 1980. You really have a great thing going here.

John Case

I would also like to welcome our new members. I really do appreciate these forums...years ago there was no such resource for old TV collectors and repairs; it is so good to have these forums, especially with the professional conduct, insight, and enthusiasm of our members.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Here's a pic of the Silvertone, It's been buried in storage since my last move, so I had to dig up an old pic. I'll probably be digging it out of storage in the next couple of weeks. Maybe this weekend. I'll take some better pics when I get it dug out.

Cool! Do you have any pics? I'd really like to see what the original volume knob looks like. Does it have a bezel or what? The hole is huge.

The channel bezel is just a thin plastic sheet with gold foil on the back. I just took gold spray paint and painted the back of it. If you do not have UHF then you could omit the hole for it. I do not have the real knobs on mine. I am making this set from parts. I will find that thread later. If you would like me to scan the bezel for you PM me your email address and I will do that. It should be real easy to make one.

No, but thanks for offering!

The gold thingie is present on mine, but where the volume knob goes, the hole in the gold thingie is huge, over an inch I think. The volume shaft is tiny, the same size as the 7 controls at the bottom.

I have no idea what the original volume knob looked like, but it was probably gray plastic because all the others are. If the original knob covered the hole up, it must have been a monster. Maybe there was some kind of a plug that filled most of the hole, and a normal size knob.

When I acquired this set I thought I was the only nut restoring stuff like this (and back then maybe I was). I thought would probably never even see another set like this, much less find the correct knob. I lacquered a steel washer (it was the same shade of gray as all the other gray crap on the front), and attached it with a tiny drop of elmers. This reduces the size of the hole to about 3/8". The volume knob is a tint knob from some other old set. It looks pretty normal in the blurry picture, doesn't it?

Since discovering Audiokarma, I thought i'd start looking for one, but I dont have the foggiest notion what it looks like.

Anyway, best of luck with your Silvertone, hope you get it working again soon.

Welcome aboard! I suggest you obtain a Sams for your set as not only will this give you most of the info you need, but the photos may show what the knobs look like.

I'll probably be back here begging for help finding a sams when I get it dug out of storage. I can't beg for help yet, because I dont know the sears chassis number. The sams for this particular set was missing at the shop I was working at back then ,so I've never even seen it. We had all the RCA ones, though so I used the one that was closest. I think it was CTC-13 (does such a beast exist?) I don't think it was CTC-15, but this set is still very much like a CTC-15. It has a novar horizontal output, and a solid state focus rectifier. The 6BK4 is mounted horizontally up high in the cage.
