I would guess the "peak pix" control label on my '73 Zenith is just an old term for sharpness. I rarely touch that control. I've noticed some DVDs produce a clearer picture than others so some may want to adjust sharpness to compensate.

My Sony Trinitron from '77 (not working anymore, quelle surprise) has a sharpness knob.
