CBS June1951
Some images taken for Life™ magazine .. sadly in b/w but showing CBS color studio work underway. I assume for test broadcasting.

I see ol' Ed in pic #1...is that the delectable Faye Emerson in #2? Had a crush on her as a little kid.

Here is a clip from 1949. I think there is footage from the ETF monitor.

At least one of those shots is mis-dated-- the one with Ed Sullivan was taken during a rehearsal for the inaugural 1954 CBS color TV special, called "Premiere".
I originally posted some color snaps from the broadcast in this thread: http://videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=194081 - Kevin |

if the image of Ed Sullivan is incorrectly dated it does show a CBS field sequential camera in use ....the images came from the Life magazine archive.

When RCA's system became imminent as the new standard CBS not wanting to invest in new color cameras decided to build a converter that would take the output of a field sequential color TV studio and convert it to the post-1953 NTSC system...They continued to use this into the late 50's when they stopped color broadcasts...Years later in the 60's when color set sales and broadcasts picked up and CBS was forced to restart color broadcasting they acquired new cameras and control systems that didn't rely on their failed field sequential tech.

This discussion can't possibly have gone off course. They're on instruments!
