Is this original ?

This is a piece of dark plastic between the glass and CRT. I can't see it being original but also cant see why someone would put it in, The set is Canadian set built by Electrohome called the pageant sold under the name Viking chassis number TV50-340.

There was many aftermarket TV filters sold in the '40's and '50's. It likely was added later. Either way I would leave it out.

Is it like a polarizing filter? Or is it just snake oil?

Polarizing filters were sold at one time, but putting one behind the glass would defeat the purpose.
