Speaking as a somewhat noobie myself, definitely get the Sams Photofact for your tv set. It'll help a lot. Me personally, I only have a very basic understanding of tv electronic theory. I know loosely what happens, and I'm pretty familiar with electronics circuits in general. But I really need a schematic to have any idea what part of the circuit I'm looking at.

Also, capacitors can be had from digikey.com or mouser.com
