Ouch! I had something similar to that happen a month or two ago...I won a pair of pre-war Zenith Transoceanics at auction and drove to pick them up I wasn't thinking and carried them by the leather handles. Somehow they both survived walking to the car and being set down so I could open the door, but when I went to load them the first one got 3" in the air before the leather let go... I'm glad only the handle broke but also mad at myself for forgetting about what decades old leather does.
