I don't want to remove the coil from the chassis if I can help it. I can see the top and bottom of the core. The top of it has a slot, the bottom dies not and there's a little debris I cleaned out from what broke off. Very difficult to photograph but the core is intact...I just have to get it out and screw it in from the bottom

Here is a photo of the bottom with it run all the way down. The only think that broke was the parts of the core on the sides of the slot.

I always use a hard plastic tool to adjust the cores. Try and refrain from using a metal tip because unless the tip fits snugly, the uneven sape will imose high stress to the brittle slug slot wall. I carved a hard plastic rod to the shape of the slot.
You can see the slot the other end? I would gently try and screw it downward and out. Do not force it if it jams. If the core only has the slot damaged one end and is otherwise okay, I would simply flip it 180 degreses and put it back and continue the alignment. |

correct that, I didn't recall the brass ring obstruction. Remove it from the top seems the only option.

I agree...slowly turning it out with a plastic flat blade tool.

I cant get it out the top. I can feel the slot starting to go. I looked down into it very gently blew the threads clean and the debris out and I think it's coming up as far as it's going to go without breaking it. So I think I'm back to replacing the coil or getting this core out and finding a substitute. From what you've tald me about this TV, that's probably not going to work.

I have an entire parts chassis out in the garage. It probably still has this coil

Have you tried a bit of heat to melt the wax residue? I have never had to replace one of these transformers. They are fixable. |

Were not those donono mica capacitors that was shown in the above pic a source of trouble in these sets?

Funny talking about HP8601a's, I found another one locally on FB Marketplace today. It came from the estate of a local engineer.
There was a whole pile of high end HP and Tektronix test equipment from the 60's thru the 1980's. I wanted only the Tektronix 2710 Spectrum Analyser and the HP8601a and offered C$120. The seller wanted to dispose of the lot which included a second Spectrum Analyser with tracking generator, a few high end older Tektronix scopes, an HP 8640 HF to SHF sweeper generator, a huge pile of Tektronix plug in modules Tek digital multimeter, frequency counter, low frequency function generators, a three foot desk equipment rack scope probes and a nice looking Wavetek Sweeper with marker option. All for C$200. Maybe I can dispose of the surplus stuff to pay for the HP8601a and the Tek 2710 Spectrum Analyser? |

Good question. I have found one bad but I generally haven't had much trouble with them in these sets. I would be curious if others have.

Yes, I've sometimes needed to replace the 270pF mica caps that couple the IF stages. However, it looks like you are getting a good image so I would not be concerned about them.
