CTC-11 potential find - question

Somebody local called me on an old 'round screen color tvs wanted" ad I ran and said they have a working ctc-11 in a black metal cabinet with a separate flat safety glass over it for $150...anybody know of any pics of a similar model anyway that this would resemble, before I can go out next weekend and eyeball it? thanks!...Frenchy

Frenchy,

That black metal CTC-11 was the no frills RCA color set in 1962. Same vertical mounted chassis as the other non-remote models. The CTC-11 used 3 types of picture tubes in its run. 21FJ w/ bonded, 21FB w/ safety glass, and some still used the 21CYP22A w/ safety glass in early models. These may be CTC-10 carry overs to the CTC-11 model run. If the set is located close by, check it out. It is a fairly compact metal box.

Thanks, would be cool if it has the pointy legs on it, if it doesn't, they are proabably easy to retrofit. Plus since is just metal, cab damage can be hammered out if necessary and even repainted....Frenchy

One more thing - so if the guy said it has a separate flat safety glass on it, that would preclude it having an FJ tube with the integral safety glass, right? Or could one of those have been replaced into it? Oh well I'll find out when I look at it I guess...Frenchy

All of the RCA 21" round, 22", 23" and 25" metal case color models I have seen have fittings in the bottom for legs so you can turn it in to a consolette.

Frenchy,

Certainly seems possible that over time a replacement 21FJ could have been installed. I don't think the mask was different or that the extra thickness of the tube face would be a problem. The safety glass might be left in place for cosmetic purposes. I think a personal look- see will answer all your concerns.

My CTC-11 has the seperate safety glass but has a later Channel Master rebuild in it with a bonded glass. (I can tell because it has slight cataracts starting) One thing about it, if they ever get bad enough I don't have to worry about gluing the faceplate back on after cataract surgery.

Just picked this one up, from a nice guy, Russell in Highland Calif. His house is like a TV and and radio museum with some victrolas thrown in! Some REALLY cool sets. This one is not going to be very fun to fix - it already IS fixed, he has been repairing TVs for over 30 years (whereas I don't really know what I'm doing!) and the picture looks like new. Oh well time to find a place to put it...will post a pic of it in a few days. Appears to be a good old non-integral-faceplate tube as I don't see any cataracts or anything like that, picture is fantastic...Frenchy

Well...this one wasn't exactly headed for oblivion, the seller has 10 times more old tvs than I do! Anyway, here's a pic, I just have it hooked up in the garage right now on rabbitears. In this area I get bad ghosting and crummy signal on just rabbitears, but the set even looks great on that so I can't wait to get it in the house with a really good signal from my roof antenna and a vcr tuner. And of course will need a degaussing.
May end up repainting the cabinet as it has fogging in the paint on top, will try buffing it out as good as I can first....Frenchy

It has the same look as an early CTC10 except for the 'New Vista' logo just above the 'COLOR' diffraction grating. Wonder if the rf amp is a 6CW4.
