My first tube set, but the CRT is busted. What to do with it?

I found this Tandberg TV-2 21" b&w on the curb a couple of weeks ago. The cabinet does not look too good. The main problem is that the CRT is broken at the neck. I guess the set was thrown or dropped on the ground, because i can´t imagnie anyone who would take of the cover, break the CRT and reattach the cover. Except form that it appears to be in decent technical condition. All tubes were in place. But what schould i do with it? TVs older than the mid 70s are extremely rare here in Norway, and this is actually only the second time i have seen a tube TV in real life. So what schould i do with it? Keep it? I don´t really have room for a broken TV unless it will be good for something. I have not heard of anyone else in the country that collects TVs, so i does not have anyone to sell or give it to. Throw it away? Well, what do you think? I need some opinions on this one before i decide what to do.

Yep, the CRT's busted, all riight. If you have the number of the CRT-over here it would be something like 7JP4 if it was a 7" for instance- you might just luck up & be able to find another one. When did color TV come to Norway ? If it was in the Seventies, they still might actually make the B&W CRTs for yr set. Good luck. On the other hand-I don't think people in Norway do this sort of thing very much, but...You could always take it to the top of the flatblock where you live, dump it off, & videotape it as it crashes down. Or you & a bunch of yr friends make a Trebouche, & see how far you can sling it...Yeah, I know...I watched way too much "Monty Python" when I was a kid...

1) Try your best to find a good picture tube. I don't know if TV repairmen saved that kind of thing in Norway like they did here? I wouldn't think it would be worthwhile to have one shipped from elsewhere, not for this set anyway.

2) If you can't find anything, save the chassis, toss the crt, and install a late model set just for fun. You can always reverse it.

Well, i guess i will keep it for some months and see if i can find something during the summer. We got color broadcasts in 1972. This was only 10 years after the regular broadcasting started, so the b&w sets were not old enough to be collectible, and most of them were probably trashed. This TV is from the early 60s, and does not have UHF. I think the CRT is either a 21 or a 23 inch.

I'd still hazard a guess there's a CRT lurking around SOMEWHERE in the back of an old TV shop that would work in yr set...or maybe talk to an older repairman & see if he has any idea where you might find one. There may be substitutes available. Don't give up yet- Over here, we have outfits like Newark & Mouser that have all sorts of electronic parts-Oslo is a big town, right? There very well could be a couple of older shops that may have what you're lookin' for. I think you'll prolly end up finding it...

Perhaps a long shot, but you could contact the Norwegian Radio Historical Society in Oslo:

http://nrhf.no/index.html

Some radio collectors (like me) also collect TVs. You never know, someone in that club might have a useful connection.

P.S. I brought my family on a visit to Oslo two summers ago. A most charming city!

I had a closer look at it this evening, and unfortunately i found several more problems. Several resistors were burned almost completely away and at one place the circuit boards were cracked. Therefore, i decided not to keep it...

DONE! (except the videotaping). I removed the chassis in case i need parts for another set later, and dropped the cabinet with the CRT 4 meters down in a concrete floor. The cabinet and CRT was completely shattered. The only recognizeable parts was the safety glass, the speaker and the electron gun from the CRT.

Yes! I love crushing stuff (at least stuff that´s not woth to keep). But i had a hell of a job cleaning up the mess. Today at school, we crushed/crashed four old cars! That was even more fun!

You are mostly right, but there are exceptions. When my mother gets money to buy a new preamp, i will run over that crappy Sharp radio/pre(op)amp/equalizer/cassette/CD-thing with the tractor.
