I found this in the Nov 1968 Popular Science.
Was this the first Sony to use the Trinitron CRT? Anyone have one?? |

Hey man !! That's my TV !! KV-7000U - I don't think Sony ever officially imported it into the US- or at least, it had very limited distribution- my dad got it in a store in New York, in late summer of '69.-Sandy G.

actually the 7000u is a chromatron
the trinitron is the second generation sony color crt. when the trinitron was introduced they printed it on the front along with the red green blue oval dots. thats why i sugested you pack it well. fat chance of finding a replacement tube if the united package smashers bust it.

The Pop Sci article refers to the tube as a "Trinitron"
I could scan it and post it if anyone would be interested? |

Chromatron was invented by Dumont who sold the patent rights to Sony in the 50's, found an article about it in an old magazine from about 1954.
More research - Lawrence tube = Chromatron, Edwin Lawrence inventor of Cyclotron (Nobel Prize), 103 element named after him Lawrencium. Invented Lawrence tube in 1951, patent completed in 1954 while working for Dumont Labs. While at RCA he is credited for the Black Matrix shadow mask, among many other things. Trinitron is a 3 gun tube that uses a wire type of shadow mask, same as was in chromatron the one gun tube. Last edited by dewickt; 10-14-2003 at 09:34 AM. |
