Look what I scored at a YARD SALE today!
A Grunow Model 861 / Chassis 8D. ![]() The small bakelite radio sitting on top is an RCA X551 (1951). It was acquired at a yard sale about a week before. I have posted a group of photos of the set here: http://oppcatv.com/kg4cna/grunow861/ It will power up, according to the guy I bought it from...but I have NOT plugged it in. I am very reluctant to do so at this point until I have more time to check it out. The guy also threw in an Emerson 578A radio and a tube tester. Cabinet looks pretty rough on the Emerson...but it's supposed to work too. I haven't plugged in either. According to the Riders schematic I found, it says "Pre November 1935" as the date. Condition-wise: The veneer appears to be lifting a bit on the front right corner down toward the bottom of the cabinet. The left front corner has a piece of the veneer missing near the top corner. The scroll work is broken in to down at the bottom left. Two of the four wooden knobs are broken and the function labels are worn off (if there ever was any). All the switches work as they should and the tuning dial cord is intact and is pretty smooth. It will definitely need some work...but all in all, for a 70+ year old radio, it's in pretty darn good shape. Anyone else have one of these sets?
