Another unusual Zenith transistor radio
I was browsing eBay this morning and found yet another small, cute, novelty radio by Zenith Hong Kong (after seeing the little 2-transistor black Zenith on the bay the other day--I didn't think I'd see another radio like it for quite some time, and in fact almost did a double take when I saw the one I am about to describe). This one is green, in the shape of an owl (in fact, if you look at the picture, you'll see the winking owl right on the front, where you can't miss it) and has an attached earphone (probably no speaker, like the Zenith 2-transistor set I mentioned in my previous post). It wouldn't surprise me if this is the same radio I mentioned before, only in a different style of cabinet. I wonder how many of these little radios Zenith HK made, how many different cabinets the set came in, and in fact how long Zenith Hong Kong was actually in business (I had never heard of this division of Zenith until two days ago). This radio is from the early 1960s, as I suspect the other one was as well. I think Zenith may have gotten the idea for the owl-shaped cabinet from its own "owl-eyes" full-size transistor portable radios of the '50s, not to mention a Zenith tube-type 3-way portable radio of the same vintage with the owl-eyes design.
