Update on my RCA Victor 6T74

Well, a fellow friend of mine from ARF, Huggy, by name, was in Florida, and, helped me find the last few seeablle bugs in it, an, repair them..
I hope to try set today.
Now, I want to show you the pictures of my finnished work on the cabinet. Give me a bit of time, as it will be slow getting them from my photobucket album.

I finnished repairing, and, re finnishing the top molding, touched up top,and, cleaned, and, waxed it.
Note some of my favorite memories from my childhood on top. My mother's original table lamp, record rack, and, several of my favorite children's records.

Now, here's the right picture.

Now, here is a view of the entire front of case. Note I have touched up spots where finnish flaked off, and, polished, and, lacquered the door hardware.

And, now, here's a view of inside front of case.
I cleaned, polished, touched up with lacquer, took entire assembly apart, cleaned it, replaced dead picture tube, and, put the corect color of gold guilding paint on RCA Victor emblem on control panel. There was none left.

I created this computer made sheet. I have my signature showing my pride in workmanship on set, next, a bit about a damper tube change, and, finally, a warning label replacement for inside the hv cage, and, that it requires a .25A 250 V. Slo-blo fuse.

Here is a partial view of the finished clean up, restoration work on chassis.

And, here is the other half of chassis. Note my labels. I replaced incorectly painted cage with corect color black paint hv cage.

Note the set playing on the bench at John Folsom's house. He helped in this project.
He got it playing. UPS dammaged set in shipping.
Then, the flyback failed. I have that replaced.

That set is the '51 model 17" rect. metal tube model.
Worth getting.
Tonight I tried it.
I HAVE A PICTURE!!!!!
Have sound issues. I suspect a broken aud. I F transformer core.
Picture is full, and, very excellent contrast.
I'll post a picture in the next few days of it playing on the bench.

Great job - congratulations! I've been following the progress of your repair on and off here and on ARF. It's a great feeling to get a 'tough dog' working again and probably even more so since it's your childhood TV.

Hope it gives you a long run of enjoyment now that you've sent the gremlins packing - you deserve it!

Thanks. Sunday, or, Monday, I'll post a picture of it playing on the bench. I still have to fix the audio, and, a couple of other issues. Then, I'll play it for awhile. If it holds up, I'll put it back together, and, finnish the adjustments...

I'm happy for ya buddy! Its been a long difficult road on that one but like i said before, patience and persistance will win out everytime. I cant wait to see it back in its cabinet playing old tv episodes on dvd. With the tv fixed what are you going to do now?

Well, it's not fixed yet. Something wrong in audio amplifier, it seems. Very low volume. Picture wants to bloom slightly. HV is slightly low. May be adjustment problem.
Horiz. sync still out of phase. I can get it to lock in, but, at one side of horiz. hold control. It should be with control centered.
These, and, picture being off to the side seem to be minor adjustment issues.
Fine tuning is also one sided.
This will take at least a few days yet.
Next project? How about a nice simple 5 tube radio???

Yep. It's been awhile. Read RCA mannual on adjustments. Horiz. locking range helps determine the frequency of the horiz. oscilator.
The other capacitor adjustment affects the amount of hv.
Horiz. lin. coil should fix my linearity problem.
All adjustment problems.

There is a 270mmf mica cpa in tone control circuit that may be causing my audio problem. I'll just replace that....

Well, tuner started acting up big time again. Today, I took the front end off, carefully removed fibre shaft assembly, and, sprayed inside like crazy. It's working a little better, but, stations still like cutting in, and, out, and, reception varies alot. I'm going to have to find a way to clean it better....
Still haven't fixed audio problem... But, it's showing a picture again.
Boy, was this set in tough shape!!!!

When I get tuner stabilized, I'll be back on the sound problem. No volume.Very low.....Amp problem. I'll keep you posted. The rest is adjustments. When I have it roughly finnished, and, have run time on bench done, I'll put it back together......

Tuner never stabilized. It got alot worse. First, chls 4-13 quit, and, went to a raster. Then, chl 3 started cutting out. NOw, it's cutting in, and, out rapidly, and, no amount of cleaning is helping. I think the tuner's shot.
It took a week of looking at junk KCS-47 chassis's to locate a tuner that looks not too badly worn. I cleaned switches, and, such, and, last night, cleaned solder off terminal strip on the back, and, installed, soldered one piece of bare ground wire that grounds filaments to chassis.
When there is enough light I will remove old tuner, and, install new one.
Before tuner gave out, I had checked audio amp, which iis working great. I checked tv ph switch, also, and, it appears to work fine.
I removed the audio det. transformer, and, dismantled it, thinking it might have a broken slug. It didn't. I'll replace transformer. If still no sound, I'll look into audio I F transformer, and, sound take off from video....
But, first, I have to get a reliable tuner back in the set.

Vertical, hv, etc. are working fine. It's a little quirky, but, I can live with it.
After final adjustments are done, it will show a fine picture.
As it is now, it's mostly stable, no hv arcing, no corona.
Picture was actually nice.
