Stereo-mono switch on Zenith MJ1035?
How was stereo/mono FM switching accomplished in Zenith's MJ1035 radio? I have one (MJ1035-1) that does not have a stereo/mono switch on the rear apron of the chassis or on the front panel (the band/function selector on the MJ1035-1 does not have a mono FM position, only AM, FM, FM-AFC and phono). The plain MJ1035 apparently did have such a switch; the MJ1035-W1 might as well. Did this radio (MJ1035-1) have some sort of automatic system for switching between stereo and mono FM mode? As expensive as these sets were when they were new, I wouldn't be surprised if they did have such an arrangement. The schematic (Sams set 751, folder 9) shows a 1N34 germanium diode used as the stereo multiplex detector. I'm wondering if this might be part of an automatic mode switching arrangement, or if it was used in connection with the stereo indicator on the front panel.
Thanks in advance for any info on this.

I have a scan of the the Sams folder for the 1035 (647-13) - it shows the stereo-mono switch in the screen circuit of the 6EA8 19 KHz amp in the MPX circuit - in mono, this amp is turned off by removing screen voltage. I assume the "mono" function is to get a listenable signal on a weak stereo signal.
I can send the scan if you're interested - PM an address. |
