quick question about an Admiral 20X12

Hello,

I just bought an Admiral bakelite table top tv model 20X12 and the on/off, volume knob is missing. In photos I've seen of this TV the three front knobs for the adjustments other than the channel changing knob all look the same. however when I try to temporarily put one of the other knobs onto the on/off shaft it wont fit because the shaft for the on/off knob does not stick out as far as the shafts for the other two adjustment knobs. Is it normal for this shaft to be shorter than the other two? if it is normal than I know it will be a headache to try to find a replacement knob for this tv... I haven't taken the chassis out of the cabinet yet so I just thought I'd ask incase anyone has this tv and could help me figure it out...

apparently the same chassis that is in my table top admiral 20X12 is also in the Admiral bakelite console tv model 20X122 and I think I've seen that some members have this tv so if someone could check their tv to see if all of the adjustment shafts are sticking the same length out or if it is like my tv I'd appreciate it..

I have 3 variations, a 20X122, 20X145 and a third which I don't have the model # handy for; in each case they all seem to be sticking out the same. Maybe the control got swapped years back? In which case it might be easier to swap the control than anything else...

As rediculous as some may think this sounds you could cut the shaft off of another potentiometer with the same shaft diameter and knob mounting configuration and use J.B. Weld (quick setting) to secure the shaft sections. After the stuff is set but not too dry to manipulate I would mount a knob and turn it through its complete rotation and adjust as necessary to eliminate knob wobble. If someone really was worried about apearance issues the product can be ground or sanded where you may not even be able to tell the joint is there. Just an idea. I guess you need to find a correct knob first to see what kind of mount it has. Anyway I hope this is of some service to you. Good luck finding that knob. Start by posting ads on all the free swap forums you know of. Starting with the one on this site. There are a lot of good folks here. Someone should be able to help you out.

Do you have a part number for this knob? I have some NOS Admiral knobs and will take a look if you have a part number.

Peverett: the knob I need looks like it's the "Maroon Horiz. Hold, Contrast, Volume" knob, part # 33C28-20

Here's a pic of the knob I'm looking for... for some reason these knobs seem to have deteriorated somehow underneith and so the opening that the shaft fits into seems disfigured and so the hole seems to not be the exact shape that it should be on any of the remaining knobs.

I will take a look. If one cannot be found, a possible fix is to use a plastic repair compound to redo the back of the knob.. Antique Electronic Supply (www.tubesandmore.com) carries this. I believe that theirs is called "Plastipare". I have used it to succesfully replace chips in painted bakelite radio cases.

Another note is that these usually have spring metal inserts. If this is missing, the knob will be loose and fall off easily. These can be taken from spare knobs, etc.

any luck with finding a matching knob in your stock peverett? Thanks for the suggestion of the plastic repair compound, I will try using that on the two knobs I have, then all I need is one more knob and the set will look complete

I have looked with no luck in my NOS Admiral knobs. I still need to look in my used box.

Speaking of the Admiral 20X122...does anyone know what Sams Photofact covers this set?

I'm not sure if samswebsite.com is showing me the actual Photofact number, or if I have to order it first.

I have a partial photocopy of the sams photofact folder Date 7-50 Set 100 Folder 1 which covers admiral chassis 20X1, 20Y1, 20Z1

And both the Admiral 20X12 and the 20X122 use the same 20X1 chassis according to this sams photofact folder.

but I don't have the entire folder photo copied as the guy who copied it for me forgot a few pages...
