Aerodag G or Aquadag E or Sprayon S00204 ?
Hello everyone,
This is my first post. I read a large number of the posts here and the information is really helpful! I restoring a 1949 Raytheon model M-1105, C-1104 porthole. I got the TV at this years Early Television convention in Ohio. So far I'm replacing all the paper, wax and electrolytic capacitors and I also decided to replace all the resistors because almost all of them are a least 25%+ high now due to heat and age. Some of the resistors are 400% over spec. Over half of the conductive coating on the 12LP4 CRT has flaked off. I understand this is important to maintain a solid ground to the CRT. Initially I tried to find Aquadag in a spray can but was unsuccessful. So I saw advice to use a spray on Graphite Lube in it's place. I have not done this yet and am having second thoughts. The can of Dry Graphite Lube is "Sprayon S00204" So should I use this Sprayon stuff or do you guys have a better idea? I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future - so far I am really enjoying the restoration. Thank you! Stuart |

Exterior coating on the CRT
Any Ideas? How necessary is this coating on the exterior of the CRT?

Welcome to AK Stuart! That's a nice set, I almost bid on it.
They also make a aquadag coating that you can paint on with a brush. I wouldn't use the graphite. Maybe you can contact Scotty at Hawkeye picture tube rebuilding, he might sell you a can but I can't promise.

Conductive paint
I talked to Scotty today at Hawkeye.
He was really nice and will be able to ship the conductive paint next week. He also mentioned that as long as I run a wire or something conductive around the tube and connect it to the remaining conductive paint which is connected to the grounding wires then that that should be enough of a ground. Of course avoiding the anode area, etc. Zenithfan1, I'm happy that you didn't bid on the Raytheon - it was the only one I bid on in the silent auction. I did bid a lot for it as a donation to the museum. bkharris, I was worried about the graphite spray rubbing off the tube. I looked over one of your previous posts and did pick up "Television and Radio repairing" from Amazon.com I'm sure that will be very helpful. I will keep you guys updated on my progress restoring the Raytheon and will probably have many more questions. |

I got the product id from a post in the antique tv forum at ARF. I like the spray since it looks better than brushing. I have done 4 tubes with it .....stays on the tube no problem. I am certain that Scotty will send you the right stuff. Aquadag is a water based graphite product. Just make sure you mask off the anode area when you put it on the crt. |
