I have had my eye on these 2 sets for sometime. Finally today the owner agreed to sell. Table top Travler which is a really nice set and plays well as you can see in the pic. The floor model Jackson was still cold from being in an unheated garage when I plugged it in. Had a good horizontal squeal, and I didnt push it. Both sets are recapped but something is going on with the Jackson that I need to pull the chassis and go over it.
I believe the Travler to be from 1952 and the Jackson from 1949?

Cool sets, and unusual brands to boot!
The Horizontal on the Jackson may just need the coil adjusted.

If the set was still cold when you tested it, you may have had condensation around the high-voltage connections breaking down. Once the set warms up, is there still a problem?

Going to wait a few days for the set to be in the house. It has been very wet and cold here. It needs to dry out. I got to thinking exactly like you stated.

It's always nice to find a set that will still work. From an electronics standpoint it's almost an impossibility, but it does happen. In my experience, when I have found something like that, it will not last long. Then you have the worry of burning up a part that is either expensive or unobtainable. So if you want to enjoy a sixty year old appliance, you really need to replace the paper and electrolytic capacitors and check the resistors. This has been said many times here but I think it's always a rule of thumb worth bringing up from time to time.

I pulled the chassis on the Jackson today. The horzontal squeal did go away after allowing the set to dry out. I thought I heard a faint arcing so I investigated. A resistor had somehow bent toward a tube socket and was giving a little snap. I might add that a different CRT was just intstalled prior to me buying it, the old crt bit the dust when it was moved recently. The set has recently been recapped, but I see some resistors that have gotten warm. The set has a prominent white vertical line that I am guessing is either a horizontal drive adjustment, or one of those resistors is out of value. I am going to make a list of resistors and replace them. I spent a good amount of time cleaning the inside of the cabinet and the chassis was full of dust. Also fixed a tear in the speaker that I made when I hit it with the vacuum nozzle. The Aleenes original tacky glue and pieces of a coffee filter work great. Cleaned the grill cloth and the set has much better visual to it.
The Travler set is a little dandy and is playing 'Combat' right now, but does have a slight audio buzz that I will look into.
