Atwater-Kent E-3 speaker photo breakdown

I had a chance to take a few pictures as I was dismantling the Atwater-Kent E-3 speaker for restoration. I could never find much info on this speaker and the parts, so I thought to share this photo breakdown of the speaker for any one that is interested.

Finished the speaker, tuned the speaker motor using a frequency generator and a hefty amp . There are two adjustment screws, one on each side of the motor, once adjusted, the speaker motor was much louder.

Wow, that's pretty dang cool! I realize its limited, but what is its usable frequency range?

I'll get back to you on that, it's still hooked up, but the frequency on the motor without it being connected to the cone really varies. I'll sweep it and write down a few frequencies that are louder then others, it sure does not have a very flat curve, if it was plotted.

Here is a crude frequency reponse on a scale off 1-15

20-60 hz, is very soft scale of about 1 , sounds like a prop of a airplane , then from 60 -600hz it climbed up on a scale of 1-5. From 600Hz-2000 it quickly climbed up in volume on my crude scale of 5- 15, starting to be to loud for me.
From 2000-4000 it dropped down fast from 15-5. From 4000 hz to 7000 it dropped down to 1 on my scale.
After 7000 I could not hear it any more.
I connected up a 5x7 car speaker and I can hear 7000 right up to 10,000 .
Of course, this is a very crude way of measuring the speaker, but it will give you some idea what it does.
The usable frequency range is from 600-4000Hz, with a very bad frequency curve, but the speaker will perform well and give that 1920's sound.

Well, its range is good for voice. I can imagine hearing a "No Calorie Fasweet" ad being played thru it.

Yea, one can download old radio programs and play it through the radio, be kinda like going way back into the 1920's .

I have deleted the Atwater-Kent E-3 speaker photos that were on Photobucket , but I am uploading the pictures again, because as I understand that some are using them for infomation to complete their restore of the speaker.
I have only been able to find some of the pictures, I will check some of the backup harddrives

Hifi, why don't you load them onto AK so they're here as a permanent record? If they are too huge you can resize them. A 100 kb jpg is actually a pretty big pic.
