Heathkit Color Bar and Dot Generator Model IG-28

I will be using this unit to adjust my 25EC58 chassis and have a question about the color gun leads.

The manual says to connect the red, green and blue leads to the rgb grid leads of the picture tube socket (assuming they mean the G2 leads). It says to make sure the point of each alligator clip pierces the insulation of the lead. This leads me to two questions.

1. Is this something I want to do? Is it okay to go about piercing the insulation?

2. Will these leads connected as instructed allow me to do what they intend (short the color gun for setup and adjusting)?

Thanks!

You need a pure red blank raster to do purity.
Best way is turn down the G & B G-2 controls & turn up the
red to abt its normal. To get it blank unplug the tuner IF
cable from the IF mudule ( 150-???). Put the cable in a safe place.
Now you can do purity if need be. Be sure the set has run
1+hours first. No need to go through the gun killer stuff.

Cool. The set's been on for three hours now. I'll go about all the adjustments and use the method you described for the purity. I pulled the IF like you suggested when I adjusted the G2s. It's easy to reach and is long enough to hang outside the cabinet to avoid a short.

Thanks

IF you use those grid-shorting leads, they go to the G1 leads, not G2.
