There is a possibility the set owner did this 40 or more years ago, maybe the set became broken, and too expensive to get repaired. But maybe he or she liked the cabinet, so the owner tossed the CRT and chassis? To keep the cabinet in the living room as a decoration. Long before people became interested in collecting vintage TVs?

CTC5s are a dime a dozen, easy enough to piece one together. It's not like the cabinet was cut up.
