Hallicrafters 1063A model info?
Ok, there's one on e*ay that I might go for. i know little about these sets.
Anyone got any general info on Hallicrafter TVs, how they perform, and what's in this set? I'm kinda split on getting it. The last thing I need is yet another 21" B&W console, but if this set's got good performance and good potential, I might go for it. I guess a tube lineup/uses and CRT is what i'm looking for, plus any general opinions on them. I've got a Bendix console which would provide really stiff competition to it (4 IF stages, horizontal hold that holds and never lets go, geometry controls for the CRT, great sound) - can this set stand up to it, or will it fall short like a cheap Admiral or RCA? |

Chuck Dachis' Hallicrafters book doesn't have much on 'em, either. They were apparently made in 1953-54, had 18 tubes, & coulda had CRTs from 17" to 21", & were in various tabletop or console cabinets. That's about it. After 50 years, I would think they're prolly rare, but basically just another 1950s TeeVee-albeit one made by a smaller mfger. They made an interesting 7" back in '48-49 that was in a case designed by Raymond Loewy, of Studebaker fame, but I think this one was just a run-of-the-mill set.-Sandy G.

If it's the set I'm seeing with the reasonable BIN price I would say it might be a good set to have.
If nothing else it's unusual to find a Hallicrafters in that size screen, it looks like it might be in pretty good shape and the CRT looks bright. Someone just listed a really nice looking Halolight: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...132052587&rd=1 and also a Philco, for too much money I think: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...132039055&rd=1 |

Go for the Halli, Mine works well after recapping. I did find that the wiring could have been better. Since this one lights up, it would be a good canidiate for restoration. Check my site for info on what I ran into.

Some other beauzeau has listed another Halolight for a BIN of $1400 (item 6132073821). Lotsa luck, pal ! His STARTING bid is $695. These Halolights are neat, but I would really like some of what he's been smokin' <grin>-Sandy G.

this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT I like the set, but it is NOT worth that. I get annoyed at some of the eBay people that try to drive up prices by giving a long-winded description on how RARE it is. Just saying it is doesn't make it so. However, if I had the cash I'd shell out more $$$ than I usually do, to get that set!

That Halolight is really cool but... the opening price might be OK if someone really really wanted it for a retro home.
Now here's a nice Philco, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...132748281&rd=1 I have one that's nearly identical and it works great on DirecTV or DVD, plays for hours with no retrace lines or sync problems. http://www.vintagetvsets.com/philcof.htm Eric |

That Halolight set was sold on ebay last year. I was outbid on the set. It is still in the state it was sold in. It went for less than $200. Must need money for Christmas!

Well, I got the set :P
The seller was one of those buy everything in sight and ebay it businesses. 3rd floor of an old textile mill. No elevator. And what a dick the guy was. More so than a typical NJer So, after managing to get the thing downstairs, I decide to pop the back off. Yippie! I know Halicrafters has that nickname "Halicrapers". Well, let's just say this thing's no Dumont. But then, it's at least semi decently built. I can't tell if it's hot chassis or not, though it's got a voltage doubler PS. I'm not to optimistic, every control is insulated. But the power tranny, though small, looks big enough to have more than just a 6V winding in it... It's got a 21MP4 in it, too. ![]() Well, bringing it home, I pulled the chassis and looked it over. Dirty, but tha'ts ok. Checked it (it had a raster), 7kv on the CRT. And no sound/snow and non filling sweep. But it's alive! Some 'repairman' tried to 'fix' some HV stuff. And, the HV box is conviently located under the chassis. There's an aligator clip at the end of the flyback's lead to the 1B3. Fairly new one, too... 3 IF stages. I didn't see if it had DC resto. Well, hopefully it'll be better than the GE I have, but the Bendix? It's still king of the hill in my house, likely. That said, the set has some redeeming value. It's somewhat functioning. The cabinet's pretty decent (but tacky). It's got a funky looking CRT. It doesn't have circuit boards. It's a bit interesting. The CRT was pretty bright at 7kv. Well, I'm gonna take the chassis upstairs and see what I'm gonna do with it. I'll get a chassis number - anyone got any hali photofacts? |
