Peter Yanczers scanning disc setup
Is there anyone who remembers Peter Yanczer's scanning disc setup (camera & receiver)? I had a receiver he built years ago and got back in touch with Peter but unfortunately at that moment he was losing it completely mentally. I thought he was still making stuff and didn't know he was very sick but he promised to make one but he went down quickly and almost didn't get my receiver back.
I never got a "camera" from him as he couldn't do anything anymore and passed away soon after that. Is there anyone out there that could build a camera to match what I have?

Peter Yancer's web site was copied to ETF years ago to https://www.earlytelevision.org/peter_yanczer.html His book located at https://www.earlytelevision.org/pdf/...television.pdf gives a description of how to build a camera and receiver but is it is different camera and receiver then his kit. I have his camera and receiver kit. I have his build instructions but the instructions are buried in storage.

I also bought the two disks, motors etc for his Camera and receiver reviewed on his website and book but never assembled them. The original kit was milar flexible 7 inch disks while his kit from the book was laser cut metal 12 inch disks.

I can't locate the instructions for building the following Mechanical TV receiver on Yancer's website under ETF. I think those original web pages were for the receiver only and not the camera. The disk was driven from the motor via a pulley assembly. The disks, pulleys and motors I purchased from Peter were for this kit.
I believe I copied those pages many many years ago but I can't locate on this PC. I will have to look on the hard drive of another PC that I have. Also those pages were from the "Experimental TV Society" newsletters written by Peter Yanczer which I have hard copies of but in storage again. Last edited by rld-tv01; 07-31-2021 at 06:22 PM. |

I retrieved my Peter Yanczer mechanical TV Kit camera from storage and took some internal photos. The photo transistor? is inside the cardboard tube wrapped in aluminum foil. It is direct view vs flying spot camera. The view opening behind the Nipkow disk is shown in the 3rd photo. The motor is synchronous and the same as the receiver. The preamp is shown in the 1st photo on the bottom right. The lens is installed in a cardboard tube with wood mount at the bottom of the the cabinet and shown in a photo several threads above. The camera connects directly to the receiver via a composite cable attached on bottom right side. It worked 20 years ago but I haven't used it much since.

I have the same kit as rld-tv01 and his photos show everything I could add. I have never opened the pre-amp box to see what is in there. Same for the receiver. It is all a tribute to Peter's engineering. Trying to rebuild it now would be a major effort. While mine is still working, I do have a problem which I will visit in a new thread so as not to hijack this one from Julian.

Thanks folks for all of the replies! This "project" is one of Peter's engineering designs and I hate trying to reverse engineer in making this camera as it was his design and making one per his instructions would be finding the parts that he sourced. (ugh!) I would like to find a Peter original and when I last spoke with Peter & his daughter, he seemed a little perturbed that I had only the receiver and not the camera to go with it. In his last days I heard him shouting in the background that sending it back to me that it should be insured for $25,000 as it was extremely valuable! (his mind being confused) It would be nice if I could locate one of his originals and save me a lot of work. Would anyone of you have or know of one camera that would be available? (or both) Mine has that RCA jack in the rear for that conposite signal.
You people have not let me down yet as I was once looking for the electronics for a Color R Tel converter which I thought was impossible and behold, one great gentleman stepped up and had the electronics that joined my color disc! A marriage made in Heaven! I love this list!!

I don't know of anyone who would be willing to part with their Peter Yanczer camera. There must be several out there? I think as far as replicating his design the two main things are the photo transister (photo diode) circuit and the Preamplifier. Both Peters book referenced above and the Link to James Hawes camera circuit talk about the photo transisters and diodes as well as the Preamplifier circuits. Jim Hawes had emailed me a couple months ago and said he had a working camera design using photo transisters. His email contact on his website is: webmaster [at] hawestv [dot] com I moved back to California from Virginia 8 years ago after retiring. I have stuff stored at 3 places. I think my copy of the camera build instructions is stored in a box with the 2 aluminum disks and motors I purchased from Peter. NBTV in UK have an audio CD which will provide an audio signal to drive a mechanical TV. I purchased their CD years ago but never used it. http://www.nbtv.wyenet.co.uk/cd3.htm I cann't remember if their mechanical TV Disks has the same number of holes as Peters. Did Peter ever build a color mirror screw unit? I remember seeing one working but cannot remember where I saw it. It was quite good for what it was. The color was amazing.

I retrieved my copy of TV Camera Kit build documentation written byy Peter Yanczer from storage. The photo diode Peter used was VTS4085S which might be obsolete. There are data sheets available for the photodiode so a current alternative should be available? The documentation also includes an schematic diagram and parts list of the camera video preamp. If there is interest in Scanning Disk TV camera build I could provide a scanned copy for ETF to place within their Peter Yanczer archive.

Details of placement of Photocell on small block of wood. Wood block then attached to rear cover of cardboard shipping tube which is covered in aluminum foil. Also camera amplifier schematic and parts list.
